Irish Riders Impress At UCI Class 1 Track Cycling Challenge
Irish riders picked up top placings at the UCI Class 1 Track Cycling Challenge in Grenchen, Switzerland, on Friday and Saturday, December 15th and 16th.
With less than a month to go until the 2024 Track European Championships in Apeldoorn, The Netherlands, Mia Griffin, Alice Sharpe and Erin Creighton took to the track in preparation for the championships with Olympic qualification in mind.
2023/24 Athlete Development Programme rider Seth Dunwoody represented Ireland across a host of endurance events, putting in a series of excellent performances.
On Friday, Mia Griffin and Erin Creighton were in Women's Omnium action as Griffin finished with a strong points race to take 7th place in a strong field while Creighton battled well to a 23rd place finish.
Dunwoody impressed with a fine start to the day as he timed a late surge to perfection in the scratch race to blow away the rest of the field in the final lap. He also picked up a 3rd place finish in the points race as well as 8th in the elimination race.
His excellent form continued on Saturday, claiming victory in the elimination race and a second place finish in the points race. He also finished 4th in the tempo race earlier on Saturday.
Following on from their Silver medal in Men's Sprint Paracycling Tandem on Friday, Martin Gordon and Eoin Mullen went on to claim bronze in the Men's Paracycling Time Trial.
Griffin added to her success, finishing second in the Women's scratch race on Saturday.
