2024 Youth Road Racing Rim Size Review

Cycling Ireland can confirm that the implementation of restricted rim sizes for youth riders in road competition has been placed on hold until January 1st 2025.

Following the establishment of Youth Working Groups across both competition and participation levels for 2024, the Cycling Ireland Technical Working Group have made the decision to allow for further review on the rule change following queries from provinces, commissions and other stakeholders within youth cycling.

The rule change stated that from January 1st 2024, wheels with rim depth greater than 35mm would not be permitted in Youth road races and time trial events. However, this is now scheduled to come into effect on January 1st 2025 as the Youth Working Groups and Technical Working Groups further review the change.

With youth participation numbers at all levels in cycling in Ireland the key factor in the decision, the working group will further review the rule change in the interest of ensuring it would not be a barrier to potential youth cyclists.

Stakeholders within youth cycling in Ireland are encouraged to contact Aaron Johnson, Youth Working Group Lead (Competition), at aaron.johnson@cyclingireland.ie and Paul Norton, Youth Working Group Lead (Participation), at paul.norton@cyclingireland.ie with any queries or input for both respective working groups..
