2023 UCI Cycling World Championships Expressions Of Interest

Cycling Ireland has opened its selection process for the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships.

The 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, from August 3rd to 13th and will feature a variety of different disciplines' world championships events.

Riders seeking selection and who meet the UCI eligibility criteria in their event or discipline are invited to complete an expression of interest form by Monday, June 26th.

The Cycling Ireland High Performance Unit will not be part of the selection process for all disciplines and categories in the expression of interest form, some of the categories and disciplines' selection processes will be handled by their respective Cycling Ireland Commissions.

The form can be viewed and downloaded here.

Guidance notes for completing the form are available here.

Events that the Cycling Ireland High Performance Unit are leading on selections are as follows:

Road/TT Junior, U23, Elite,

Track Elite,

Para Road/TT and Track,

MTB XCO Jnr, U23, Elite,

BMX Racing Jnr and Elite,

BMX Freestyle Park

For MTB DH and BMX Flatland, please complete the same procedure with the same timelines and we will work in conjunction with the relevant commissions who will lead on selection matters.

When received by the UCI, all information on selection quotas will be communicated through the relevant channels before the selections are convened.

Iain Dyer, Cycling Ireland High Performance Director, said:

“The key aim of selection is to select the best team or individuals we can, however we won’t be selecting riders or teams as a matter of course simply to fulfil entry quotas because the event is nearby. The most important thing for ourselves and our funding stakeholders is that our selections are clearly connected to our aspirations to be as medal competitive as possible in major championship events within this Olympic cycle or next. It’s imperative selections can stand up to this scrutiny whether it’s our best young junior riders with their sights set on LA Games in 2028, or our existing elite riders thinking of this years World Championships on their journey towards Paris 2024.”

Dyer also highlighted the tight timelines created with the much earlier than normal date of the UCI World Championship programme this year.

He continued:

“Whilst it’s novel to have virtually every discipline at the same World Championships, it’s also very much mid-season for these disciplines with important events happening right now that could influence selection. These include the European Games for Mountain Bike Cross-country and BMX Freestyle Park, the Road National Championships, as well as the many Track GP’s that are taking place at the moment. We wanted to incorporate as many of these milestone events as possible in our selection considerations.”

"We understand it will be important to riders in some disciplines to wait until the European Games, or National Road Champs to have concluded at the weekend so they can add that result to their expression of interest forms. But with our selection procedure carrying us immediately from Tuesday 27th through to the end of the week, it’s important not to forget the deadline by close of business on Monday. We can’t consider anyone who hasn’t completed an expression of interest and submitted in time."

Those interested can complete the expression of interest form and return it to HPAdmin@cyclingireland.ie by close of business on Monday, June 26th.
