#SeeSenseReport - Creating a bright future for our cities

Cycling Ireland's Official Bicycle Light and Ride Insights Supplier, See.Sense is inviting cyclists to use its free app to report safety issues encountered on their ride this summer, to provide transport planners with much needed data to plan for cycling during Covid-19 and beyond.

The Cycling Ireland and See.Sense partnership is aimed at enhancing the experience and safety of members of the cycling community and delivering exclusive benefits to members. With the launch of the #SeeSenseReport campaign it gives cyclists across the island of Ireland a voice. Data will be made available to transport planners and relevant stakeholders to help shape planning for cycling during the Covid-19 pandemic and beyond.

With Sport Ireland research finding the number of adults cycling on a weekly basis has almost doubled to 510,000 in the Republic of Ireland and many essential workers opting to commute by bike, towns and cities are taking action to put in place measures to enable social distancing and encourage active travel.

To help empower the cycling community, a new feature in the See.Sense smartphone app has been released. This free to use feature allows all cyclists, and not just cyclists using See.Sense products, to easily report using the app.  Given that safety is the biggest barrier to cycling, the app will initially allow riders to report on safety issues encountered on their rides, such as:

  • potholes
  • close pass
  • collisions
  • obstructions
  • other events

Additional reporting capabilities will also be added soon to specifically address social distancing.

This crowdsourced data will be shared on the See.Sense website which can be viewed by both the cycling community and can be accessed by local authorities over the Summer period. The data is available to help inform cycling infrastructure plans and deliver positive change in our towns and cities.

Therefore See.Sense and Cycling Ireland are calling on cyclists to help, by riding their bikes and uploading data, opinions, and suggestions to the See.Sense app as regularly as is possible throughout the month of June. By doing so, they are being empowered with the chance to push for a real change in cycling infrastructure in their area.

See.Sense CEO Philip McAleese spoke of his excitement for the #SeeSenseReport campaign;

This is an unprecedented opportunity for cycling. The Covid-19 crisis has been a terrible disaster that has caused an immeasurable amount of suffering, which has touched all of our hearts. What it has also highlighted is how little space we have for people in our towns and cities, with only small paths and narrow lanes allocated for cycling and walking, which has made it almost impossible to safely social distance in places. We are delighted that the government has made the decision that they have to improve walking and cycling facilities and by making the #SeeSenseReport data available, we are working to help to empower cyclists to influence change that will help to make cycling safer.

See.Sense CSO Irene McAleese added;

We already have an amazing community of cyclists who share ride insights collected with See.Sense products to help improve conditions for cycling. There is a short window of opportunity to act now to embed cycling as part of our new normal and to reap the associated health, and air quality and congestion benefits.  Improving cycling infrastructure is a big part of the change needed to sustain this change, and we are delighted to help give the cycling public a voice in this regard.

Marketing & Communications Manager, Scott Graham commented;

See.Sense are a fantastic partner and share the same values and objectives as we do in Cycling Ireland. We are all committed to getting more people on bikes and developing cycling as both a sporting pursuit and means of transportation which can be safely enjoyed by people of all ages and backgrounds. See.Sense offer a generous 30% discount to Cycling Ireland members and I would encourage our community to avail of this membership benefit and utilise the in-app reporting feature.
