New UCI Technical Equipment Regulations for 2026 – Cycling Ireland Position

Following ongoing review between the Technical Working Group and Cycling Ireland Sports and Operations Director, it has been decided that for “Domestic Competitions” where we are continuously trying to increase participation numbers, that a number of the new UCI Equipment regulation changes for Road and Cyclo-Cross Bikes and equipment (listed below) will not be enforced by Cycling Ireland and our Commissaires during 2026. We will continue to review the situation to establish if these regulations will need to be introduced domestically.

However, events held exclusively under UCI Regulations – namely in Ireland – National Championships that appear on the UCI Calendar (Elite & Junior) these new regulations will be applied. The regulations concern the following rule changes and we would advise riders to comply with these as they must be compliant with the regulations when competing in any UCI event here or overseas.

We can confirm that a number of National Federations are implementing these changes in full for their Domestic Events in 2026 while others are potentially phasing in their introduction. Rather than preventing riders from racing domestically with equipment that is non-compliant with the below, we will be trying to educate for the future. However, if we see these regulations abused to the extent that a safety concern is deemed to exist, we will have to act accordingly.

Rim Depth

The UCI have capped the rim depth for Massed start events in Road and Cyclo-cross at a maximum of 65mm, however, for 2026 in domestic events, we will not be expecting commissaires to have the tools locally to enforce this limit or stop a rider who happens to turn up deeper rims from starting the event. Therefore, we will be starting 2026 with this regulation only being applied in Ireland in UCI Events as above.

Handlebar Width

The UCI have given minimum dimensions for the width of the handlebars and the distance between the brake hoods. It is our intention not to stop riders racing domestically if these minimum dimensions are not met. The new minimum dimensions are 400mm overall width, with a minimum of 280mm between the brake hoods. With this regulation there has been a lot of discussion around women’s physique and bike sizes for them so for this, domestically we will again start 2026 not applying this UCI regulation domestically with this regulation only being applied in Ireland in UCI Events as above.

Flared Handlebars

The UCI have now regulated the flaring of handlebars stating that the box in which the drop portion of your handlebars can fit must be no more than 65mm wide. Again, we will be advising riders locally of the problems they can face if we fully introduce these new UCI regulations – while at the same time encouraging as many riders as possible to enjoy racing on their own equipment rather than Team supplied equipment as we see in many other countries.

Traditional Helmet

Maximum Dimensions - 450mm x 300mm x 210mm

Air Vents - Minimum of 3 – no longer fully sealed

Ear Covering - Ears must not be covered and totally exposed

Visor - No integrated visor arrangement allowed

It is recommended that any new purchases of equipment in 2026 for use in domestic competition complies with the updated UCI Regulations and that the current Cycling Ireland position is one of continuous review.

If you are considering buying new equipment for the future or need clarification on any of the above changes to UCI regulations and their application domestically, please do not hesitate to contact Paul Watson - Sports and Operations Director.
