Performance Pathway group kicks off 2025 with Training Camp

Cycling Ireland’s Performance Pathway Group launched their 2025 season with a dynamic and engaging three-day training camp held at the Tollymore Outdoor Centre in Co. Down. The camp brought together aspiring athletes from across the country to hone their skills, build camaraderie, and set the foundation for a successful year ahead.

The training camp featured a mix of intensive rides through the picturesque hills and surrounding area, complemented by insightful workshops and presentations designed to enhance both athletic performance and personal development. Highlights of the weekend included:

Nutrition Workshop: Led by Matthew Hooks from the Sports Institute Ireland, the session provided athletes with practical strategies for optimizing their nutrition to support training and competition.

Performance Planning Presentations: Focused on setting goals and mapping out the year ahead, these sessions equipped athletes with tools to effectively plan their training and racing schedules.

Michael Black, Performance Pathway Lead for Cycling Ireland, reflected on the success of the camp:

“The first training camp of the year is always a fantastic way to kick off the year. It’s not just about the physical training; it’s about building a sense of community and ensuring our athletes are equipped with the knowledge and tools they need to excel. The workshops on nutrition and performance planning were particularly valuable, and it was inspiring to see the group so engaged and motivated for the season ahead. Over the weekend we had the support of Matty Teggart and John Buller who provided local knowledge and guidance throughout all the road rides. Having this support and expertise only strengthens the collaborative work we having been doing with the respective regions and coaches and further adds value to our programme. Both Matty and John have performed at the highest level and were able to share their own experiences with the young riders. "

Looking ahead, the Performance Pathway Group will continue their development with a full Strength and Conditioning assessment and programming session this weekend. This initiative, delivered in collaboration with University College Dublin (UCD) and Craig Dowling, underscores Cycling Ireland’s commitment to providing athletes with world-class support and resources.
