Cycling Ireland Performance Pathway Group Embarks on Strength and Conditioning Journey with UCD
Cycling Ireland’s Performance Pathway Group recently participated in their first Strength and Conditioning (S&C) assessment and training session in collaboration with University College Dublin (UCD). This milestone marks the beginning of an exciting phase of development for the group, as they integrate S&C into their training routines to enhance their performance on the bike.
During the session, athletes underwent comprehensive assessments to evaluate their physical capabilities and identify areas for improvement. They were also introduced to proper lifting techniques, exercise prescription, and other key elements of S&C that are critical to modern athletic performance. The focus was on equipping the athletes with the knowledge and skills to incorporate S&C safely and effectively into their training regimens.
Michael Black, Cycling Ireland’s Pathway Lead, emphasized the importance of S&C for today’s cyclists:
“Strength and Conditioning is an essential component for the modern-day athlete. It not only improves overall performance but also plays a vital role in injury prevention and long-term development. This collaboration with UCD allows us to provide our athletes with the best possible guidance and support as they work towards their goals.”
Following this initial session, the athletes will meet twice a month for supervised group sessions and will follow individualized programs tailored to their needs. These programs will be monitored and adjusted through collaboration between UCD coaches, Cycling Ireland Pathway leads, and the athletes’ personal cycling coaches.
This partnership with UCD underscores Cycling Ireland’s commitment to fostering a holistic approach to athlete development, ensuring that young cyclists are equipped with the tools and knowledge to excel both on and off the bike.
