2026 Commonwealth Games Selection Policy

In collaboration with Commonwealth Games Northern Ireland, Cycling Ireland has published the selection policy for the 2026 edition of the Commonwealth Games due to be held in Glasgow next summer.

The journey of this Commonwealth Games has proved to be a challenging one since the original bid winners, Brisbane, Australia gave up their hosting rights last year creating a race for Commonwealth Sport to find a new host with little time to spare.

The successful 2014 Commonwealth Games host city of Glasgow stepped forward at the last minute to stage the 2026 edition, but in the process a much slimmer version of the event has emerged.

For cycling this meant that only track cycling and para track cycling survived the cull of events which took place, so unfortunately the great moments of the 2023 UCI Road World Championships won’t be relived on the roads and streets around Glasgow. Nevertheless the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, home of Scottish Cycling has proved a world class competition venue over many years of hosting high calibre events.

CGNI have published their overall Commonwealth Games selection policy for Glasgow, available here and this year the National Governing Bodies have been overlaying their own sport specific criteria and policy, which will see Cycling Ireland nominate Northern Irish riders to CGNI for final selection to represent Team NI next year.

The process is open to all riders with a valid NI claim holding either Irish or GB passport. You can find the Cycling Ireland Commonwealth Games specific policy here.
