Introduction to Coaching

The Cycling Ireland Introduction to Coaching course is an innovative one-day course.  


The course is open to all and introduces participants to the core principles of coaching, with a focus on skill development, effective coaching practices, and the vital role coaches play in supporting cyclists from grassroots to elite levels.  


Participants engaged in practical sessions covering balance bike techniques, cycling skills, and foundational coaching competencies. Upon completion, attendees are qualified to deliver Cycling Ireland’s Balance Bike and Cycling Skills programmes and to assist in coaching sessions across the country.  


The Introduction to Coaching is the initial step on the Coaching Ireland Coaching Pathway. The qualification is accredited by Sport Ireland.  


Duration and Form: This is a one-day course with a mix of classroom and practical experience.

Requirements:

  • To attend the Introduction to Coaching Course candidates must be over 18 years of age. 
  • The course is open to anyone and while some cycling or coaching experience is helpful it is not essential.


Certification 

On successful completion of the Introduction to Coaching Course candidates will be sufficiently skilled to deliver safe and effective Balance Bike and Cycling Skills Programmes. 

UCI Coaching Courses

The UCI Coach Development Programme (CDP) is designed to provide coaches with the opportunity to study and practice all aspects of coaching the cycling disciplines. Its aim is to produce and develop competent coaches who are capable of progressing athletes through to the highest level.



About the UCI Coaching Programme


The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) is the world governing body for sports cycling and oversees international competitive cycling events.


The UCI has developed a high-level coaching programme, with the aim of developing competent coaches who are capable of progressing athletes through to the highest level.


UCI Level 1 and Level 2 coaching courses are run around the world, through national federations. Higher level coaching courses and additional training is provided at the World Cycling

Centre, Switzerland.
