Competitive

There are two types of competitive licences for adults; a Limited Competition licence and a Full Competition licence.

A Limited Competition (LC) licence allows you to compete in all domestic competition except open road races. This licence would cover you for events in disciplines such as Track, BMX, Off-Road, Time-Trials, Hill-Climbs, Club Racing and Club Leagues, Bicycle-polo and Artistic Cycling.

This type of licence is available for adults over the age of 18. Under Eight (U8) and Under 10 (U10) Youth licences are also classed as Limited Competition licences.

The Limited Competition licence is €80/£72 if you are in a club and €110/£99 if you are not in a club. There is a further €10 charge if you are from Ulster. The reason for the higher fees in Ulster is that the province has elected (at the provincial AGM) to levy a provincial fee upon each member rather than each club. Leinster, Munster and Connachht charge each club a provincial fee.

Both the U8 & U10 licences are €10/£9 and are not subject to the Ulster levy.

For Off Road XC licences, categories available are S1, S2, S3 and S4. If you are unsure as to which category would best suit you, please contact your club secretary or the off-road commission.

A Full Competition licence allows you to enter open road races as well as all the various disciplines listed above.

The categories you can select from are based on your ability, the highest being A+, which is reserved for those road riders who are on pro-teams (with the exception of female pro riders). A1 is the next highest category, then A2, the majority of the members are either A3 or A4 riders, with the A4 category being reserved for new members, and weaker/less experienced riders. Race distances vary depending on the category. In general, all adult riders taking out their first full competition licence must take out an A4 licence.

Full Competition licences are available to adults over the age of 18. Under 12 (U12), Under 14 (U14), Under 16 (U16) and Junior (JR) Licences are also classed as Full Competition licences.

For riders in the U12 & U14 categories the cost is €20/£18. For riders in the U16 category the cost is €35/ £32 for riders who are club members and €65/£56 for un-attached members. For riders in the Junior category the cost is €50/£45 for club members and €80/£69 for un-attached members. For adults the cost is €135/£122 for club members and €165/£149 for un-attached members.

Under 16 and Junior members who do not wish to race but still want to cycle may take out a Leisure Licence instead of a Full Competition licence.
