Women in Sport and Bike for Life Funding Available

01/09/2016

The "Women in Sport Initiative" was launched by the Irish Sports Council in 2005 to increase participation of women in sport. The objectives of the Women in Sport programme were to raise the overall physical activity levels among women and to support women's roles within sports organisations.

Cycling Ireland has received funding under this initiative and plan to support a number of cycling courses for women around the country based on our Bike for Life programme.

Bike for Life is a beginner's cycling programme, in which a cyclist is brought through the various skills and techniques involved in cycling. The focus of the programme is on learning and meeting new people, with the group cycle a prominent feature in the programme. Trained leaders guide particpants through an 8 session programme where they learn cycling skills and techniques, how to ride safely on the road as well as gaining basic knowledge on nutrition, mechanics and training principles.

Bike for Life is a great way to encourage more people into cycling, help them become more confident on their bike, increase club membership and receive some funding for you or your club or group at the same time.

We are looking for clubs, community groups or leaders who are interested in running a Bike for Life programme in their area. Ideally leaders should already hold a cycling coaching qualification (Ride Leader, Foundation or Level 1) or have some experience with coaching or guiding cycling groups.

Group size is one leader to 8 participants

The cost for a programme participant is €15 and includes an 8 session course, insurance, Bike for Life training logbook, water bottle and cycling buff.

Each leader will receive the pack above plus additional payment to organise and run a course.
