‘Sustainable Days’ emphasises the importance of cycling to leading a greener lifestyle

Dublin City Council have organised this online event for the whole family to explore a range of eco-friendly practices that are easy to incorporate into everyday life.

Dublin, 20 November 2020   Dublin City Council proudly presents Sustainable Days, a new online event that will show participants how to live a greener lifestyle from the safety of their own homes. This FREE family event will take place online on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th of November from 10:30am each day, featuring a number of interactive workshops, webinars and talks focused on cycling and the importance of eco-friendly forms of transportation to our environment.

Sustainable Days will focus on the small everyday changes we can all make in order to live a ‘greener’ lifestyle, while encouraging eco-friendly methods of transport in cities and towns across the country. The event supports the objectives and aspirations of Dublin City Council’s Climate Change Action Plan 2019-2024, which features a broad range of actions across five key areas including: Energy and Buildings; Transport; Flood Resilience; Nature-Based Solutions; and Resource Management.

One of these key areas is Transport, with a clear focus on reducing carbon emissions in the city through the use of cycling as a greener alternative to other forms of transport such as cars and buses. Sustainable Days will offer virtual workshops and events specifically designed for cycling enthusiasts of all levels – from beginners to experienced cyclists, there will be something for everyone at this fantastic online event!

Participants are invited to register for The Rediscover Cycling Virtual Workshop Mark Dunn, Rediscover Cycling Programme Manager! This workshop will take place on Saturday 28th November at 11am, and will consist of a combination of visual bike demonstrations and practical maintenance tips to try out on your own bike at home. This is a great activity for the whole family to participate in to spruce up your old bikes and get them in good working condition.

Sustainable Days and Dublin City Council will also be hosting a virtual screening of the award-winning documentary film, Motherload at 7pm on Sunday 29th November, followed by a panel discussion with Liz Canning, film director, Ellen Cullen, vice chair of Dublin Cycling Campaign, Joan O’Connell, Monthly Cycles and Donna Cooney, Cycling Mayor for Dublin.

Motherload is a fascinating documentary detailing a new mother’s quest to understand the increasing isolation and disconnection of the digital age, its planetary impact, and an unlikely antidote to these issues: cargo bikes!

Filmmaker Liz Canning cycled everywhere until the birth of her twins in 2008. Transporting two babies via car was not only unsustainable but took the freedom and adventure out of her life, and Liz felt trapped. A simple Google search for “family bike” uncovered a global movement of people replacing cars with cargo bikes: long-frame bicycles designed for carrying passengers and heavy loads. Liz set out to learn more, and Motherload was born.

This event is FREE, but registration is essential. Registered participants will receive a code to view the film as well as a link to join the discussion afterwards, which will be sent out the day before the event. The film screening will take place at 7pm and the post-film discussion will follow at 8.30pm.

To celebrate Sustainable Days message of a greener lifestyle, Bleeper Bikes and Moby Bikes will be offering discounts on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th of November, for event attendees to get out for a bike ride within their local 5km radius! Bleeper Bikes customers will have access to a free day of use on Bleeper Bike, using the code “SD2020”. To redeem the code a user must register an account on the Bleeper app. The code can only be used once by each user. Moby Bike Rentals will offer a 30% discount on bike rentals on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th November with the voucher code “SustainableDays2020”.

Sustainable Days is brought to you by Dublin City Council and Dublin City Council Events Section, supported by The Rediscovery Centre and organised by Limelight Communications.
