Ronan Grimes shatters Irish Record to claim World Championship Bronze

Ireland scores second medal at Para-cycling World Championships

Galway native Ronan Grimes has won Bronze in the C4 Individual Pursuit Race at the UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships in Milton, Canada. The medal is the second from Team Ireland after Katie-George Dunlevy and Eve McCrystal won Silver in the Tandem Pursuit on Friday.

Grimes broke the Irish Record to qualify for the bronze medal ride, lowering the mark to 4:45.045 for the 4-kilometre test. In the race for Bronze, Grimes lined up against Jason Marcon of the USA.

The two riders were separated by 0.1 of a second in qualification, putting pressure on Grimes to improve on this in the fight for bronze. Grimes delivered in the afternoon session setting a second Irish Record, a stunning 4:43.806 to win bronze for Ireland. Marcon also bettered his qualification time to ride 4:44.537.

“I’m really happy with that performance. The qualifiers in the morning were really tight, there was a second between second, third and fourth” Ronan commented after the race.

“I knew I was in for a hard ride in the afternoon but luckily I delivered. The plan that we set out for the afternoon, my laps were a lot smoother. I’m delighted to come away with that medal.”

Katie-George Dunlevy and Eve McCrystal were back on the track this evening and continued their good form breaking the Irish Record for the Women’s Tandem Kilo TT. Their time of 1:10.248 saw them finish just outside the medals in 5th. Chris Burns was also in action in the Men’s C2 Scratch Race where he finished 8th.
