Boylan 13th and Downey 18th at World Track Championships

Boylan 13th and Downey 18th at World Track Championships

Lydia Boylan finished 13th in the Women’s Omnium at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Berlin.

The Dubliner had a full schedule of racing on the third day of World Championships competing in the Scratch, Tempo, Elimination and Points races which make up the Women’s Omnium event. She skilfully managed to avoid a crash in the opening round of the competition, finishing 9th in the Scratch. This was followed by 13th in the Tempo, Elimination and Points race.

The evening session saw Mark Downey line up for the Men’s Points Race, an event we won Bronze in at the 2019 World Championships. Raced over 40 kilometres a sprint is held every ten laps with 5, 3, 2, and 1 point(s) being awarded to the top four finishers in each sprint. In addition to the sprints, any riders managing to lap the main field are awarded an extra 20 points.

Downey missed the early points on offer for the intermediate sprints but put in a gutsy performance in a bid to gain a lap and get his race back on track. Ultimately, he was left disappointed with an 18th place finish.

Both Downey and Boylan will now refocus on their primary objectives at this year’s World Championships as they bid to secure Men’s and Women’s Olympic qualification slots in the Madison. Downey will team up with Felix English while Boylan will join forces with Lydia Gurley.
