Irvine Fifth in European Track Championship Omnium

24/10/2011
Martyn Irvine was the star performer of the Irish team over the weekend when he finished fifth in the omnium at the European Track Championships in Apeldoorn in the Netherlands.

The 2011 An Post Rás stage winner was unfortunate to crash heavily in the elimination race on day one of the two day Olympic event and had to go to hospital to have his injuries checked. Despite this disruption he managed to win the scratch race on the second day of competition and was lying in second place going into the final event, the 1km time trial. An eighth place finish saw him drop to fifth in the final standings, just four points off the podium. Irvine also secured valuable Olympic qualification points as his London 2012 campaign enters a vital stage with several rounds of the World Cup coming up.

Mayo's David O'Loughlin came out of retirement from international track racing to finish 14th in the points race. The Irish women's team pursuit squad of Caroline Ryan, Sinead Jennings and Ciara Horne finished seventh in their event which kept their Olympic qualification dream alive. Ryan also took part in her first omnium at international level, taking 13th spot.
