Portaferry 3-Day Report - 22nd -24th July

Adam Armstrong (Eurocycles) defended his slender lead over several near rivals in the final stage of the Powerhouse Sport Portaferry 3-Day to claim the overall title. Although currently riding for a Dublin based club, Ards CC will see it as a local win with Armstrong having started his cycling career with the club as a youth.

Connor McConvey (XMTB McConvey Cycles) won the final stage following a solo break. The next three riders home were all vying for overall victory with Paddy Clarke (Castlebar CC) taking second, he was unable to shake off the yellow jersey however and gain the one second he needed to take the overall victory. Mickey Murray (Clann Éireann CC) was third with Armstrong finishing close behind in fourth.

Day 1 Report
John Heverin (Clann Éireann) powered to victory in stage one of the Power House Sport Portaferry 3-Day at Kirkistown Motor racing track last night. Heverin went clear of the pack along with 3 times winner Conor Murphy (Eurocycles) in the closing laps. At the finish line he held of a fast moving bunch headed by North Down's Matty Blayney.

57 riders lined up for the start of the event which will tackle four stages this weekend. The riders completed 20 laps (30 miles) of the Kirkistown track in bright sunshine. Racing was fast from the start with several breaks gaining gaps but nothing stuck until the final laps and even then the bunch finished right on the heels of Heverin and Murphy. With 53 riders finishing in the same time the race reamains wide open and anyone of these competitors could be crowned the overall winner on Sunday afternoon. Philip Bremner (U/A) won two of the sprint primes with Mickey Murray (Clann Éireann) winning the other, but Heverin will wear the coveted yellow jersey in this morning's 51 miles road race on the Portaferry /Lough Doo road circuit. The points jersey will be worn by Bremner who is equal on points with Heverin.

Ernie Magwood Memorial 10 TT - 24th July
East Tyrone CC at the request of the Magwood family held the inaugural Ernie Magwood Memorial 10 yesterday. A large field of 47 riders lined up in bright sunshine with little or no wind on an almost deserted road. Riders traveled from all over Ulster, most of them having known Ernie personally, told of how they felt obliged to attend. One of the furthest traveled was Ivan Robinson of Ards CC who was the only rider to break the 21 minute barrier, which is no mean feat on this course with its dead stop turn. Next up was Richard Davidson of Island wheelers, who was second for the second Sunday in a row, recording a PB 21:07 and getting very close to the 20 minute mark, some going as he only recently joined the 21 minute club. Third on the day was last man off Aaron Deane, showing his testing ability with a 21:27. Fastest Lady was ETCCs own Ann McFarland with an impressive 24:11, she will be hard to hold onto on the hills round Omagh next weekend.

Many Thanks to all who helped out, marshalled, competitors etc, A special thanks to our Sponsor Lafarge Cement, and to Kildress Plumbing Supplies for there premises. Thanks also to photographer John Stafford who as well as being on hand to take some snaps on the day, he also presented Ernie’s wife Christine with a framed picture of Ernie from a TT in 2009, the silence which followed brought back all the memories of the reason we were all gathered there.
