Ulster Women's League Details Announced

18/02/2010
The Ulster Women’s Association (UWA) have announced their Road Race and Time Trial League details for the upcoming season.

The Road Race League will consist of 8 events, with a rider’s best 7 results to count. The opening event will be the Phoenix GP on Sunday 28th February. Several of the rounds will be supported by individual sponsors and the overall prizes will be sponsored by Sportactive.

The road races will be run over varying distances, with the emphasis on shorter events at the beginning of the season to encourage new riders. There is also a handicap system in place which enables women of varying abilities to compete. As the season progresses, one of the races will be run in a mass start format and distances will increase to give those not used to this type of racing an opportunity to gain experience for races such as the Ulster Championship and Irish National League events. It is also hoped that this will encourage more riders to compete in events such as the Ulster Championship.

Due to the success of the inaugural league that included just one time trial, the UWA Chair, Louise Fullerton has also decided to put together a separate Time Trial League. A total of 8 time trial’s will be promoted in conjunction with Ballymena Road Club and sponsored by Caldwell Motor Factors, all of which will take place on the Woodgreen circuit which holds the majority of Irish time trial records over several distances.

In addition to these events, the province will also promote a round of the Irish National League and the Northern Ireland Road Race Championship in May, while in August the Ulster Road Race Championship will take place. The N.I. and Ulster Time Trial Championships will also crown winners over various distances.

In order to compete in the UWA Road Race and Time Trial Leagues you only need to hold a club competition licence, however for races such as the Irish National League and Championship events an open competition licence is required.
