Henry wins Haldane Memorial

08/03/2010
Jason Henry (Unattached) won the John Haldane Memorial at Newry on Sunday.

Newry Wheelers promoted two races on Sunday, with the 'A' race containing A1/2/3 riders and the 'B' race being made up of the A4 riders. Due to road works on the Hilltown circuit, the Newry club reverted back to the Newry-Warrenpoint dual carriageway circuit which they had used in previous editions before moving to Hilltown in recent times.

For the second Sunday in succession in Ulster, the A1 riders failed to bridge the handicap they had been given at the start of the day, while the A2 riders just narrowly missed the 'catch', closing in fast on the A3 bunch towards the finish. In the end it was Jason Henry (Unattached) who took the victory in a large bunch sprint by less than a tyre from young Ballymena RC sprinter, Mark McCullough. Gareth Crothers of the newly formed Bikeworks club claimed third place in the sprint ahead of Tony Hare (Apollo CT). Jack Wilson (East Antrim Audi CC) was the leading junior in fifth.

The support event saw the two winners of the 'B' events at the Annaclone GP and Phoenix GP take first and second, on this occasion Terry Mackin (Banbridge CC) got the better of Gary Wilson (East Antrim Audi CC) in the sprint. Both riders have now gained enough points to be upgraded to the A3 ranks.

Armstrong Victory in Navan & CU Team Performs Well
In Navan meanwhile, Ulster's Adam Armstrong (Eurocycles) won the Cycleways Cup from a two man break. Ryan Connor had a successful first outing as 'Rider/Manager' of the Cycling Ulster team by placing two riders in the top ten. Philip Lavery (Look Academy Belgium) has recently declared for Ulster as his mother is from County Fermanagh and he managed to take seventh with CU team mate Simon Williams (Juiced Orchard) one spot behind in eighth.
