Armstrong Snatches TOU Victory

03/05/2010
Adam Armstrong (Eurocycles) snatched victory in the Tour of Ulster today when he overhauled a 16 second deficit on the final stage to move from third to first.

Stage 4 Report
Tim O'Regan (Engraveit.ie) took the final stage of the Tour of Ulster in Dungannon today, coming in ahead of a chasing group containing eventual winner Adam Armstrong who had started the day in third place, 16 seconds behind British Veteran, Malcolm Elliott (Motorpoint Marshals Pasta).

Armstrong was not willing to settle for just a podium position in this year's Tour of Ulster and was active throughout the final stage along with the second placed rider on GC, Philip Lavery (Cycling Ulster-Slane Cycles). Lavery's attempts to win the two major stage races in the province back to back, after winning the Tour of the North at Easter had come unstuck on Sunday morning's stage when he went off course in the final kilometer, losing vital time to Elliott and Armstrong.

Having won the yellow jersey in the Tour of the North on the final day however, no one at the start this morning would have bet against the Look Academy rider from delivering the win. Despite several attacks however Lavery was marked by Elliott and this enabled Armstrong to slip off the front in a break that built a substantial lead despite chasing from both Elliott's Motorpoint Marshals Pasta team and Lavery's Cycling Ulster - Slane Cycles squad.

Armstrong's victory will have enhanced his prospects of heading to the Commonwealth Games in India in October. Elliott meanwhile had to be content with second place, while Lavery dropped to third but had the consolation prize of winning the Jim Traynor Memorial Trophy for the Best Young Rider (U23) in the race. The Cycling Ulster - Slane Cycles squad also took the team prize, 3 seconds ahead of Eurocycles.
