St Enda's Cyclists Complete Galway Challenge

17/08/2011
Galway - Omagh - 163 miles

The recently formed Omagh St. Enda's CC in Tyrone blazed a trail of glory up the west coast of Ireland earlier this summer when up to 155 club cyclists took part in a major fundraising drive for the local GAA club and a local charity.

The St. Enda's GAA club had been organising fund raising cycles for the past few years, normally completing the journey from Bundoran in Donegal to Omagh. This year, however, they upped the ante by cycling 163 miles from Salthill in Galway to Omagh over two days on July 1-2 and to mark the occasion, they officially registered with Cycling Ireland as a Cycle Club.

The club chose Galway as its starting point to symbolise the club's connections with the land of tribes, as St. Enda, their patron was based on the Aran Islands. Some of the club's cyclists actually started the journey on the Aran Islands before joining up with the rest of their colleagues in Salthill.

Many of the club's cyclist took up the challenge of cycling for the first time in order to participate in the challenge and help raise funds for their GAA club as well as the Palliative Care Unit at the Tyrone County Hospital in Omagh.

Today, many of the St. Enda's cyclists continue to enjoy the benefits of cycling around the roads of Tyrone and are regularly supporting other local charity cycle events. www.omaghstendas.com
