Team Sky professional Steve Cummings heads to Ireland for Sky Ride Etape Hibernia
With less than a week to go until Ireland's closed road sportive, Sky Ride Etape Hibernia - an IMG Challenger World Event - top professional rider from Team Sky Steve Cummings has added his name to the roster of riders taking part in Ireland’s first closed road mass participation cycling event in County Clare, Ireland on Sunday August 21.
Cummings has an impressive list of performances in cycling. Already he has an Olympic Silver medal, is a commonwealth games gold medallist, world track champion and in 2008 he finished 2nd in the week long Tour of Britain.
A week after riding the Olympic Test Event for England in London, Cummings is looking forward to joining the thousands of riders on the 84 mile route this Sunday.
On announcing his involvement in the event Cummings said:
"Ireland is a beautiful country and all cyclists know the rich history of events and riders from the country. I am excited to be lining up with Sean Kelly, Dean Downing and of course Apprentice candidate Jim Eastwood alongside thousands of riders, to face the challenge."
On welcoming the professional rider to the event, Julia Warne from Etape Hibernia said:
"We are excited that our partner Sky has enabled us to bring a rider such as Steve to the event. The thousands of riders will get some insight and guidance from him along the route, which will add to the experience. Steve is an incredibly talented professional bike rider with Team Sky and it will be interesting to hear what he thinks of the route on Sunday."
Etape Hibernia have also announced that they will be opening last minute entries at the weekend for local riders who haven’t managed to enter yet.
They will be sold on a first-come first-serve basis over the event weekend. Those who wish to enter can purchase their place via cash or credit/debit card on Saturday from 9.00am – 8.00pm during event registration at The Glor, Ennis. In the unlikely event that places still remain come Sunday, they will be available at Helpdesk in the market place from 5.45am until 6.45am - strictly no later.
Please note: due to the additional administration, these will be available at a cost of 59 EURO.
Sky Ride Etape Hibernia is part of a national campaign from Sky and British Cycling created to inspire and help everyone whatever their age or ability to get on their bikes and have fun with the ambition is to get 1 million more people cycling regularly by 2013. The event is being organised by IMG, in partnership with Sky, Fáilte Ireland, Shannon Development, the Shannon Region Conference and Sports Bureau and Clare County Council.
