YOUTH TRAINING DAY A SUCCESS

Mondello was the place to be last Saturday if you are a youth cyclist. Over forty young cyclists of all ages travelled to the Kildare venue at the weekend from all corners of the country. The focus of the training camp was learning – for the budding cyclists and parents alike.

With the sun beating down on the closed circuit race track the cyclists came from all disciplines to improve their bike handling skills and group riding. The riders participated in coached sessions for cycling in groups, focussing on cornering, speed training and acceleration training. As the day went on there was a notable improvement in each cyclist. Youth Development Coach, Martin O Loughlin, and National Development Coach, Frank O Leary, were the key coaches with the assistance of Rachel Ormrod, Aisling Hubbard and Heather Boyle. Between training spins Richie Keddy from the Cycle Inn was present to answer the questions of both parents and cyclists regarding bikes and equipment; he also gave demonstrations on bike maintenance and kindly provided bottles for the riders.

While the cyclists were tackling the obstacle courses and perfecting their cornering and sprinting, the parents attended several presentations, which were co-ordinated by head coach Paddy Doran. Anne Marie Hughes of Junior Golf Ireland presented research on youth participants, and what keeps them in a sport. She highlighted the importance of a multisport development for young athletes, and the burnout consequence for early specialisation in sports. Paddy Doran gave a presentation on motivation for young athletes, and the type of environment that enhances their enjoyment, while Martin O Loughlin gave a presentation on the balance of study or exams and sport. Irish Institute Sport representative, Niamh Ní Cheallachair spoke about the importance of developing good nutritional habits to the parents also.

For some riders this was preparation for the Mayo Youth Tour and other upcoming events, for others it was their introduction to cycling in groups, all youths left as better cyclists, after a very enjoyable day. Thanks to everyone for supporting the National Youth Training Camp last weekend.
