Ireland has a very successful paracycling programme. On
USParalympics there is a good definition of paracycling:
"Paralympic cycling competition is open to male and female athletes with physical disabilities such as amputation/limb loss, blindness/visual impairment, spinal cord injury/wheelchair-users and cerebral palsy/brain injury/stroke."
For the Irish Paralympic Team the ultimate focus is the Paralympic Games, which is held shortly after the Summer Olympic Games, at the same vinue. Paracycling was first introduced to the Paralympic Games in 1984, open to Cerebral Palsy athletes. In 1992 the modern classifications were introduced, and in 2004, handcycling was introduced. Ireland has a full squad of athletes in all classifications, and the team manager, Denis Toomey, always welcomes interested athletes.
